Its colours range from deep black and metallic grey to warm amber, honey, and reddish tones, depending on trace elements such as iron.
Sphalerite forms in hydrothermal veins and metamorphic environments, where mineral‑rich fluids deposit layers of zinc sulfide that later crystallize. When tiny quartz or calcite crystals grow across the surface, they create the shimmering druzy effect.
